You are receiving this Campus Crime Alert as part of Georgia College’s commitment to provide campus crime information, in compliance with the “Timely Notice” provisions of the federal Clery Act (Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act). The Georgia College Department of Public Safety is giving notice of safety advice relating to the following reported incident.
On Sept. 10, 2016, at approximately 3:30 a.m., Public Safety was notified by a Georgia College student of a strong-arm robbery that was reported to have occurred near the intersection of West Greene and South Clarke Streets by two unknown males. During the robbery, the student was punched in the face and had their wallet, phone and keys taken. At this time, the male offenders are unknown and the case is under investigation.
The Milledgeville Police Department is investigating the robbery.
The safety of the campus community is a top priority for Georgia College. Whether you are living on campus, in neighborhood housing, or are coming here to work and teach, you are urged to pay special attention to safety and security precautions.
While all crimes cannot be prevented, here are some suggestions everyone may want to consider:
- Utilize SNAP for Safety Escorts, phone 478-445-SNAP (7627);
- Trust your instincts;
- Walk and park in well-lighted, well-traveled areas;
- Travel in pairs;
- Be aware of your surroundings at all times;
- Know where to find emergency call boxes;
- Plan your escape route;
- Keep your car keys/residence keys in hand;
- Use the RAVE Guardian app to set a safety timer and/or notify GC Public Safety;
- Report suspicious individuals and/or activity to GC Public Safety at 445-4400 or 445-4054.
If you ever find yourself in a potentially unsafe situation, you may always request an escort from GC Public Safety any time.
