You are receiving this Campus Crime Alert as part of Georgia College’s commitment to provide campus crime information, in compliance with the “Timely Notice” provisions of the federal Clery Act (Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act). The Georgia College Department of Public Safety is giving notice of safety advice relating to the following reported incident.
On June 20, 2017, at approximately 2:20 a.m., GC Public Safety was notified by the Milledgeville Police Department of a strong-arm robbery that was reported to have occurred around 1 a.m. on the same date. The incident reportedly took place at Arts & Sciences fountain area in the 300 block of Montgomery Street. The victim, who is not affiliated with Georgia College, reported he was using a shortcut through the GC campus to reach his destination. The victim stated that two males approached him at the fountain and took a backpack and small power tool. The victim reported that during the encounter, physical force was used by at least one of the offenders, resulting in injuries to the victim. One male offender is described as a stocky, young Caucasian with short brown hair wearing a horizontal striped shirt. The other male offender is described as a thin, small framed, young Caucasian with sandy colored hair, wearing a light colored t-shirt.
The Georgia College Police Department and Milledgeville Police Department are jointly investigating the incident.
The safety of the campus community is a top priority for Georgia College. Whether you are living on campus, in neighboring housing, or here to work, you are urged to pay special attention to safety and security precautions.
While all crimes cannot be prevented, here are some suggestions everyone may want to consider:
- Utilize SNAP for safety escorts when this service is operational, phone 478-445-SNAP (7627);
- Trust your instincts;
- Walk and park in well-lighted, well-traveled areas;
- Travel in pairs;
- Be aware of your surroundings at all times;
- Know where to find emergency call boxes;
- Plan your escape route;
- Keep your car keys/residence keys in hand;
- Use the RAVE Guardian app to set a safety timer and/or notify GC Public Safety;
- Report suspicious individuals and/or activity to GC Public Safety at 445-4400 or 445-4054.
If you ever find yourself in a potentially unsafe situation, you may always request an escort from GC Public Safety any time.
