The Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA) Awards Committee has selected Daniel McDonald, operations manager of WRGC Radio 88.3 FM, to receive a 2018 GSBA Beacon Award. The association honored him at the GSBA/GSSA Conference December 7, 2018 in Atlanta.
The award recognizes print and electronic media representatives whose coverage over time has created an understanding of public education issues by informing the general public about programs, policies and/or issues affecting the public schools, students and/or communities.
The Baldwin County School District nominated McDonald for his efforts in creating an understanding of public education issues through a series of broadcasts as well as other radio programs.
“It was a really pleasant surprise,” he said. “Most of the time, I’m sitting in the studio not knowing what the audience’s reaction is. So, it’s an incredible honor to have someone from the school board office say they wanted to nominate me for an award.”
The Baldwin County School District was looking at a five-year planning initiative and wanted to reach out to parents and other community members, and that’s where McDonald came in.
“I wanted to reach out to our audience and engage in that kind of conversation about the future of education for K-12 here in Baldwin County,” he said. “The programs that caused them to nominate me were something I saw as a community need.”
McDonald will also be recognized at the Baldwin County Board of Education meeting this evening.
