Relationship building is one of the main goals of engaging students in a digital learning environment. Several research studies have found a positive correlation between the level of students' persistence and success in an online learning environment and students' perceptions of social presence. There are various tools and techniques that can improve social presence in an online environment which include discussion boards, personalized grading feedback, building collaborative teams, the use of synchronous sessions and the use of faculty-created videos that link to course content. This session will provide participants with information on how to develop relationships with students, as well as some of the benefits of the suggested options.
