After teaching chemistry at Georgia College for the last 10 years, Dr. Julia Metzker has accepted a new position as the community-based engaged learning (C-bEL) director.
As co-chair of the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) Task Force, Metzker has worked to gain support for the planning process by facilitating open forums, administering surveys and encouraging participation through committee membership.
“After a national search Metzker was offered the position as community-based engaged learning (C-bEL) director, an initiative designed to meet the requirements of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) QEP,” said Dr. Tom Ormond, associate provost.
Metzker is a strong believer in engaged learning in her courses.
“She has a demonstrated record of success incorporating engaged learning strategies into the classroom, leading workshops with faculty to reframe content in courses using civic or social issues and a commitment to working and interacting with the local community,” said Ormond.
Metzker is an active faculty member who has served in a number of capacities including University Senate and curriculum and assessment committees at the university and college level. She has also chaired the committee responsible for the recent revision of the core curriculum.
“I will endeavor to knit together diverse interests by facilitating a range of programming that will allow individuals to find the approach that best suits them,” she said.
In her new position, Metzker will work to bring community partners together with faculty and staff at Georgia College to develop opportunities for students to apply what they learn in the classroom to real-life situations.
“I have greatly enjoyed the challenge of bringing planning discussions to life in the written document, ENGAGE, that communicates a distinctive vision for enhancement at Georgia College,” said Metzker.
ENGAGE, the Georgia College Quality QEP, provides a blueprint for building a culture of engaged learning through the development of structured and assessable C-bEL experiences that connect students with the liberal arts and the wider community. This plan is the result of an inclusive and deliberative two-year process that sought input from university constituents.
