Faculty member named Governor’s Teaching Fellow

Jennifer FloryDr. Jennifer Flory is known throughout campus and in the community as the director of choral activities at Georgia College.

Her dedication to her craft and students is showcased in the half-a-dozen or more concerts each year she directs.

It’s that drive to help her students learn more effectively and efficiently that led Flory to apply to the Governor’s Teaching Fellows Program.

“The main reason I wanted to take part in this program was to be able to enhance my students’ learning through innovative teaching methods. After nine years at Georgia College, it was very helpful to be able to learn from faculty members across the state and from different disciplines,” she said.

Flory was selected as a Governor’s Teaching Fellow for the 2014 Summer Symposium.  As one of 14 faculty members from institutions of higher education across Georgia, she was selected after a highly competitive application and selection process.

The Governor's Teaching Fellows Program was established in 1995 by Gov. Zell Miller, who led the state from 1991-1999, to provide Georgia's higher education faculty with expanded opportunities for developing important teaching skills. Since the program’s founding, 14 Georgia College faculty members have been selected to participate.

“From taking part in this program, I now have knowledge and context to make changes and incorporate new learning experiences for my students,” said Flory.

The Governor’s Teaching Fellows Program is an outreach program of the Institute of Higher Education at the University of Georgia.  To improve the quality of instruction in Georgia's colleges and universities, the Governor's Teaching Fellows Program assumes the complex challenge of moving college faculty members to the leading edge of instructional practice. 

“It’s always an energy boost to see what others are doing and learn from their teaching experiences,” said Flory. “With this ‘toolbox,’ I now plan to improve the design of three of my courses. Most of the ideas came from this experience.”

More than 75 different disciplines, professions and teaching areas have been represented through the program during the last 19 years, and Fellows have come from more than 45 public and private institutions statewide. 

“The Governor’s Teaching Fellows Program will be enormously beneficial, not just for Dr. Flory, but for her students and colleagues” said Dr. Steven Jones, director of the Center for Engaged Learning, Teaching and Scholarship (CELTS). “A number of Georgia College faculty members have participated in the program and have brought back and shared the good ideas and techniques they learned as Fellows.  I think that the ‘multiplier effect’ that results from Georgia College faculty members sharing what they learn with their peers is the best part of the program.”

Flory received her Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music in choral conducting from University of Cincinnati. She obtained her undergraduate degrees from Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio.

At Georgia College, Flory has served as director of choral activities since 2005. She is also the graduate coordinator for the Master of Music Education program and is an associate professor.
