May 2018: Mass Comm major reflects on time with International Education Center

Amy Huang

From: Decatur, GA.

Major: Mass Communication.

Activities/Research: The International Education Center appealed to me more than the other offices because I thought my background would give me an advantage. I'm happy I chose the IEC because it has opened my eyes to so many opportunities that go beyond what I thought I was ever capable of. I've gained leadership, international perspective, and now I have a desire to travel in the future more than ever.

Why Georgia College: At the time, I had only applied to private schools and my high school professor told me to look into GC since it had that same "private college quality" without the price tag. I received an email about attending GLIMPSE, a tour specifically for minorities, and fell in love!

Important Take Away from Georgia College: Appreciate the moment for what it is and be ready to accept where life takes you. Moving away from home was a tough transition and now, as I am about to graduate, I am dreading moving back home! I do not regret all the moments staying up late and driving to Walmart in the middle of the night, making that hard decision to drop a class, or doing crazy things with my friends. I have LOVED my experience at GC and would do it all over again if I could! As one door closes, I have faith another one will open and I am excited to see where it takes me.

Plans after graduation: I want to have an established job for awhile, but soon after I want to be able to travel the world and visit my fellow international friends I have met over the years though international club. Being so involved with the IEC has already helped me to establish connections with those living in more than fifteen countries already. I am more open-minded now due to those relationships that I think will help me in applying for jobs.

Favorite faculty or staff and why? The most impactful person I have met at GC is Susie Ramage at the IEC. Susie has acted like a second mom and mentor to me my four years at GC. She has taught me the importance of embracing your roots and accepting the good, bad and ugly moments in life.
