Name: Linwood "Thad" Thompson, '14
Major at GC: Marketing
Why did you choose Georgia College?
I began my college years at Young Harris College, after two years I had plans to transfer to the University of Georgia to pursue a degree in geology. Around that same time I began dating my now wife, Emily Taylor Thompson, '13. Emily attended Georgia College, so I decided to get a degree in love and follow her to Milledgeville to pursue a degree in Marketing -- it turned out to be an amazing blessing.
Did you have a favorite professor or class?
My favorite class was Dr. Sam's Market Research. She always works hard to inspire her students.
What was your inspiration to pursue a career in finance? What were some challenges you had when you started your finance business?
I felt called to serve and help people to be good stewards of their resources. I enjoy collaborating with families to problem solve and plan for their futures. I would say my biggest challenge was the courage it took to turn personal relationships to professional relationships.
What is the Georgia Student Finance Commission (mission, history etc)? How did you get appointed on the board?
The Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC) provides student financial aid and educational services for Georgia’s students of all ages. Originally created in 1964, GSFC has helped numerous students throughout the years and has helped ensure that all Georgians are able to attend college regardless of financial need. Gov. Brian Kemp made the appointment.
What has been the most rewarding part of your career so far?
The most rewarding part of my career so far is that I get to work each day with my wife and my best friend to have a multi-generational impact on our clients.
How has your education at Georgia College helped you become who you are today?
I think the most impactful lesson I learned in my time at Georgia College was through my volunteer work in the GIVE Center. If you are constantly giving you are constantly growing.
