Class of 2018: Educating future generations

Incoming freshmen Jessica Chatman and Marissa Gowen will begin their first semester of college as education majors. Along with a shared major, the two also share a passion for working with children.

Chatman will major in early childhood education in the fall and attended the July 18 orientation for freshman and transfer students at Georgia College.

“While in high school, I worked at day care center for several years,” she said. “It’s amazing to be able to watch children grow and learn.”

That same passion is also important for her family, as her mom has taught for 30 years.

“As an educational professional, it means a lot that she chose to pursue a profession that I also love,” said Bertha Chatman. “Teaching is the perfect fit for her and so is Georgia College.”

Chatman, who is from Decatur, Ga., plans to get involved in several ways once she begins her freshman year in August.

“I have been looking into getting involved in a sorority, the Emerging Leaders program and the Black Student Association,” she said.

Similar to Chatman, Gowen’s mother is also an educator, which enabled her to get a firsthand account of the life of teacher.

“Education is just what I’ve always known,” said Gowen. “I love working with younger kids, and I’m also a tutor, so it makes sense to go into education.”

Gowen, from Folkston, Ga., toured other colleges, but settled on Georgia College because of the education program, technology and campus atmosphere.

“When we visited last spring, our first impression was that the campus was really beautiful, but also there was a sense of community here,” said Gowen.

Marissa’s father, Doug, was equally as impressed with the college during their visit.

“We liked the fact she had all these resources at the library available to her,” said Doug. “And we were also impressed with the level of security on campus.”

Gowen plans to also study early childhood education in the fall.
