The Museum of Fine Arts Hosts the Thomas F. and Janice C. F. Armstrong Antique Map Collection

MILLEDGEVILLE, GA- The Georgia College Museum of Fine Arts (MoFA) is proud to present, You Are Here, with antique maps from the Thomas F. and Janice C. F. Armstrong Antique Map Collection.

This exhibition showcases 40 French, Italian, English, German, and American maps that depict the growth of the southern states of America - most particularly, Georgia. Map dates range from 1760 to 1870. Each map contains the state of Georgia, many of which include Milledgeville as the state capital.

The maps presented in this exhibition provide geographical insight through their assumptions, or mistakes, and improvements, into the world view of over 200 years ago. Beyond the beauty bestowed to them, they offer opportunities to ponder upon the lessons of history, including topographical discoveries, changes in territories and states, and determining waterways and other natural boundaries.

This maps collection was donated to the College by Thomas F. and Janice C. F. Armstrong. Dr. Thomas F. Armstrong is a historian with undergraduate and master’s degrees from the University of Colorado and a doctorate from the University of Virginia.

Dr. Armstrong was a History professor at Georgia College and State University. From 1987-1993, he was the Dean of Arts and Sciences where he oversaw the construction of the Arts and Sciences building.

Dr. Janice C. Fennell Armstrong received her undergraduate degree from James Madison University and her master’s and doctoral degrees from Florida State University.

Dr. Armstrong came to Milledgeville as the Director of the Russell Library in 1978. During her time at Georgia College and State University, she procured grant funding to help preserve the Flannery O’Connor papers and gave formal impetus to the development of the rare book collection and rare book room of the College.

You Are Here, is co-curated by Georgia College students from: Museum Studies, Art History, History, Mass Communications, and Liberal Studies programs. There will be an informal museum talk with Dr. Thomas Armstrong and the students during the reception on March 15, at 5:30 pm.

The maps are loaned courtesy of the Georgia College Ina Dillard Russell Library Special Collections.
