Thursday, April 4 Georgia College’s spring Wind Symphony concert, “Let Our Rejoicing Rise,” will be at 7:30 p.m. in Russell Auditorium. Director of Bands Clifford Towner and Georgia College’s Newell Scholar, Dr. Carolyn Barber, will give a pre-concert talk at 7:15 p.m. in the auditorium. Come be inspired by music that celebrates the natural beauty, storytelling, joy and timelessness of life—music that believes in strength that overcomes tragedy and the healing power of letting go. The title of this concert comes from the lyrics of James and John Johnson’s time-honored song, “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” A unique piece is Omar Thomas’ “Of Our New Day Begun,” which honors nine victims and families from the June 17, 2015 terrorist attack on Mother Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston, South Carolina. Thomas composition is a powerful reminder that anger and hatred cannot stifle the human spirit of compassion. A $5 donation is encouraged. All proceeds benefit music scholarships or the GC Department of Music through GCSU Foundation, Inc. For more information, please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 478-445-8289.
