The exhibition, "Structure and Edge: Exploration of Form" presents studies of design and surface that ceramic artist Curtis Stewardson has been investigating for the past 20 years. He examines intersections of a shape’s construction and surface qualities by deconstructing the mass, volume, and edge of each vessel. Stewardson views these formal elements as a puzzle composed of form and color. All of his work is built on the process of artistic inquiry. In a recent interview, Stewardson explained, “While the work is linked to the history of pottery forms, I’ve tried to develop different relationships by using unexpected shifts, folds, pivots and apertures within each planar surface.” This results in works that are well backed by history, but are also making strides in a new direction of what ceramics could be.

Curtis Stewardson was born in Adrian, Michigan.  He earned a Bachelor of Arts in French from Earlham College, Indiana and in 1994, while studying ceramics at the Worcester Center for Crafts he met ceramicist John Glick at a workshop. Stewardson relocated to Michigan to work as Glick’s Studio Assistant at Plum Tree Pottery from 1995-1996. He later earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1998, and his Master of Fine Arts from the Pennsylvania State University in 2000. He has exhibited his work and lectured both nationally and internationally.

This exhibition is curated by Georgia College senior art major Grace Lombard, in fulfillment of her Museum Studies capstone thesis project.
