The great Southern author Mary “Flannery” O’Connor, ’45, would’ve turned 99 on Monday, March 25. Georgia College & State University celebrates her birthday Saturday, March 23. The university will hold free tours at Andalusia from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and a cake cutting at noon. A new exhibit at the Andalusia Interpretive Center will also debut that day. Georgia College & State University’s Department of Historic Museums earned a prestigious state-wide award Friday, Jan. 19, for Andalusia: The Home of Flannery O’Connor. The Georgia Association of Museums (GAM) presented its 2024 Special Project Award to Georgia College’s Andalusia Interpretive Center—a 5,300 square-foot, $3.5 million building completed in March 2023. Georgia College & State University mourns the loss of its campus neighbor and friend, Miss Louise Florencourt, who passed away this week. A cousin of Flannery O’Connor, Miss Florencourt, 97, also served for much of her life as the co-trustee of the Mary Flannery O’Connor Trust, and worked closely with Matt Davis, GCSU’s Director of Historic Museums, on the restoration and curation of Andalusia, and its designation as a National Historic Landmark.
