OIB Workshop: What's in a Name?
OIB Workshop: What's in a Name?
The Office of Inclusion & Belonging will present a virtual workshop called “What’s in a Name?” on Tuesday, Feb. 18, from 3:30 until 4:30 p.m. It will be facilitated by Jennifer Cash Birch, Education Outreach & Training coordinator, Georgia College & State University and Melissa Gerrior, director, Women’s Resource Center at Georgia Tech.
Our names can often tell the story of our ethnicity, cultural background and familial lineage and signify gender expression. Names are a part of our identity. For many members of the LGBTQ+ community, using the name and pronouns of a person is a simple way to show respect for their identity. Asking for and using people's correct names and pronouns can also set a tone of allyship and inclusion. However, mispronouncing and misgendering someone’s name negates that person's identity. Furthermore, this can lead to anxiety, withdrawal, ostracism and resentment which, in turn, can hinder academic progress, the workplace environment and the overall campus climate.
In this workshop, you will learn:
• Why pronouncing names matter and the impact on people.
• How to respectfully ask and use people’s pronouns.
• Helpful tips to remember and honor people’s names.
- How to gracefully acknowledge when you make a mistake.
Please register to attend. All registrants will receive the link to the workshop the day before.
