Georgia College announces Executive Director of the Andalusia Institute

Dear Colleagues:

After a thorough national search was conducted, I am delighted to welcome Dr. Irene Burgess as our inaugural executive director of the Andalusia Institute. She brings significant experience and a compelling vision for the Institute.

Burgess comes to Georgia College after serving as executive director of the Pennsylvania Consortium for the Liberal Arts for four years. She led the organization, which focused on strengthening relationships between 11 liberal arts colleges.

Burgess will direct the newly-created Andalusia Institute, which is focused on promoting educational programing centered around famed author and Georgia College alumna Flannery O’Connor. Among Burgess’ tasks for the Institute will be developing a writers creative workshop, working with local and regional K-12 schools and the creation of a residence program.

“I am honored to serve as the executive director of the Andalusia Institute at Georgia College,” said Burgess. “As a young adult, I deeply appreciated the writings of Flannery O’Connor. It has shaped me personally and professionally, and I am honored to expand upon her legacy through my work at the Andalusia Institute.”

Among her accolades is a successful background in fundraising. Burgess has applied for and managed grants totaling $1.95 million over a 9-year period, including funders such as Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Arthur Vining Davis Foundation. Burgess has an extensive background in strategic planning, leadership training, program assessment, grant development and diversity and inclusion strategies.  She holds a PhD in English Literature from the State University of New York at Binghamton.

Burgess will assume her role as executive director of the Andalusia Institute beginning Jan. 21, 2020.

I thank each member of the search committee and Dr. Eric Tenbus for his leadership during the search process. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Burgess to Georgia College.
