Every year, the University System Africa Council organizes a simulation of the annual meeting of Heads of State of the African Union (AU). The simulation, which takes the form of a three-day conference hosted in turn by one of the universities/colleges in the System, is known as SEMAU or the Southeastern Model of the African Union. Georgia College & State University had the unique experience of hosting the conference in 2004 here on campus. SEMAU 2021 will be held in Milledgeville, Georgia, and will be hosted by Georgia College & State University, from November 3 to 6. Participants at the conference will stay at Fairfield By Marriott hotel in Milledgeville. Each university within the System is expected to send student delegates to the SEMAU to represent one or more African countries. These students will study the selected African countries in detail, in order to represent them adequately at the simulation of the Heads of State meeting. In the past, students from GC have represented Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Liberia, South Africa and Botswana among others, and they have found the experience very rewarding and exhilarating, particularly insofar as it has deepened their knowledge of the African continent.

GC delegations will represent Nigeria and Ethiopia this year. If you are interested in African affairs in particular or in international or multicultural affairs in general, here is your opportunity to attend and participate in the conference, learn beyond the classroom, broaden your horizon, make new contacts with other students as well as faculty members across the university system and beyond, hear a distinguished African (usually an Ambassador) giving a keynote address on Africa, acquire in-depth knowledge of the African continent, gain insights into the art of diplomacy, and sharpen your conflict resolution skills. Almost all expenses (conference registration and hotel accommodation) will be covered, and you will be given a certificate of participation. You may also win an award. SEMAU is hands-on, experiential learning and the SEMAU concept is very much in line with GC’s liberal arts mission in general and GC Journeys in particular, which includes internationalization and an emphasis on diversity.

SEMAU is sponsored by the Board of Regents and the System Council for International Education.

GCSU participants will be sponsored this year by the Deans Office of College of Arts & Sciences, International Club, the Office of Inclusive Excellence, Rural Studies Institute, and Government and Sociology Department. GCSU SEMAU participants are asked to join the SEMAU Club and the International Club.
