Research presents Central State Hospital’s relationship to race and mental health

Once the largest mental hospital in the world, Central State Hospital (CHS) left a lasting legacy on the Milledgeville community. Over generations, families worked at the hospital, which often provided steady jobs with decent benefits. Dating back to the mid- 1800s, patients and workers there faced challenges brought on by society norms through the years and racism as well as uninformed medical diagnosis and a poor understanding of psychology.

Former Georgia College Newell Visiting Scholar Dr. Mab Segrest spent years researching Central State and will explore “Racism and the Haunting History of Central State Hospital” Thursday, March 18 at 6 p.m. The virtual presentation will showcase the research for her new book “Administrations for Lunacy: Racism and the Haunting of American Psychiatry at the Milledgeville Asylum.”

“The focus of my research is the degree to which race is a through-line over decades in which slavery, Indian removal, Civil War and Jim Crow impacted the institution,” said Segrest. “But my semester in Milledgeville also made me aware of the conscientious work of many people in Milledgeville who ...

Glass Recycling Locations on Campus

The Office of Sustainability is excited to now offer glass recycling services to the campus community. The protocol for the glass recycling program calls for glass to be kept separate from single-stream materials (paper, cardboard, plastics #1 and #2, and aluminum cans). Glass intended for recycling should only be deposited in blue containers labeled with a "GLASS ONLY" stamp. These containers can be found outside of select campus buildings. Check out the interactive campus map to locate the glass recycling bin closest to you. All questions related to glass recycling or recycling in general should be directed to recycle@gcsu.edu.

Subject: Upcoming Survey for the Great Colleges to Work For program

Georgia College has decided to participate in the Great Colleges to Work For program, a national survey designed to recognize institutions that have built great workplaces. Regardless of whether or not we are recognized, the data we receive will be helpful as we continue the process of creating the best workplace possible.

As we continue to contend with a global pandemic and budget shortfalls from the economic downturn, we remain committed to taking care of our students and our faculty and staff. Therefore, we view this survey as a great opportunity to assess the climate of our campus after a year of unforeseen challenges, and to demonstrate our willingness to listen to your concerns.

REMINDER: Wind Symphony Spring Concert: In "Flex"

Thursday, March 11 Georgia College’s Department of Music presents its annual “Wind Symphony” concert virtually this year at 7:30 p.m. Music students, like much of society, have dealt with changing conditions due to COVID. One obstacle is not always having wind instruments needed to perform. In light of this, many composers created music this year using flexible instrumentation. The added element of experimentation was a learning process but also an opportunity for creative expansion. This concert is the result of that learning process and includes compositions from the last decade. Please follow us on facebook.com/GCMusicDepartment to view this live-steamed concert. A $5 donation is encouraged. Online donations can be made at alumni.gcsu.edu/music. Mail-in donations for music scholarships can be made out to GCSU Foundations, ...
