CTL Workshop - Getting Ready for the Mid-Term Grading: Taking Full Advantage of the D2L Grade BookThe mid-term is approaching, and do you worry about the massive work of grading? This virtual workshop will introduce some advanced features of the GeorgiaVIEW grade book, such as Quick Eval, Rubric, importing grades from Excel, release/unrelease final grades, and adding feedback in bulk to help instructors finish their grading efficiently. Participants will have opportunities to work on their class grading with support from CTL staff.
This virtual workshop will take place at 3 pm on February 16. The meeting link will be sent out to registrants on the day of the workshop.

READ MORE A&S gets new associate deanDr. Winston Tripp has joined Georgia College as the new associate dean for the College of Arts and Sciences.
Most recently, Tripp served as associate dean for research and director of the Center for Research at the University of West Georgia (UWG) Office of Research and Sponsored Projects. This involved developing university-wide initiatives to support faculty; working with nonprofits and government; and assisting with strategic planning and needs assessments.
“Dr. Tripp comes to Georgia College with enthusiasm for working for a public liberal arts university,” said Dr. Eric Tenbus, dean of Arts and Sciences.
“One particular strength that Dr. Tripp will contribute to our work in the college is his expertise in generating and analyzing data,” Tenbus said. “He directed a research center at West Georgia, and this experience will be tremendously valuable in guiding future decision-making within the college.”
Tripp was raised in Nevada and lived much of his life in the western United States. He got his bachelor’s from the University of Oregon and Ph.D. at Pennsylvania State University, both in sociology.

Advising staff, Career Services, and our National Scholarships office will join us each evening but our primary desire is for our students to meet some faculty, get involved in GC’s STEM and econ areas, and learn more about all the resources provided.
Students selected the day that best fits their needs/goals and are coming to enjoy food, conversation, and activities with our faculty.

The "old" GIVE Center location in MSU is under renovation at this time so NO locations are available to reserve. These spaces (Lobby, Conference/130, Training/150, etc.) should show as CLOSED in 25Live. If/When that changes, they will be opened again for reservations.

This talk on Feb. 21 at 1 p.m.will explore exhibits built using the Omeka platform with a particular focus on incorporating the Neatline plugin to create interactive maps. Continuing with maps, we will look at some possibilities for including these in projects built using the Scalar platform. We will also talk more generally about getting started with digital humanities projects and planning for sustainability.

Students with portfolios of their stunning websites, digital books, or visualizations of research will have an edge in today’s competitive job market. To help you develop a basic understanding of digital humanities, the Digital Humanities Collaborative will host a series of presentations this semester on easy-to-use and free tools for digital scholarship. These short “show-and-tell” talks will be held virtually. READ MORE Mentors Needed for Admitted StudentsDo you have one extra hour a month? That is all the time it takes to help the Office of Admissions with their Adopt an Admit Mentor Program! Admissions has compiled a list of diverse students who have been admitted to Georgia College for Fall 2022. They are seeking to provide each of these students with a faculty or staff mentor to build relationships and guide them toward enrolling at GC. The mentor will be asked to:
- Communicate with the student one to two times per month from February through May – preferably a phone conversation.
- Connect the student to needed resources at GC – Financial Aid Office, Advising, etc.
- Encourage the student to deposit - discuss why a GC education is unique/valuable and why the college or department would be a good fit for them.
- Encourage the student to POUNCE, complete Housing, and attend Orientation.
- Provide a kind/listening ear and support the student as they transition from HS to college.

This partnership allows AmeriCorps members to join CISMBC and volunteer in the local Baldwin County schools tutoring students and providing several educational, social, economic, and emotional supports. AmeriCorps members earn a monthly stipend and can qualify for a significant monetary education award at the end of their time of service. Members must commit to serve for at least one year (September 1st-June 30th) and should expect to volunteer approximately 25 hours per week.

READ MORE College of Education: Social Justice Dialogue SeriesThe John H. Lounsbury College of Education continues their Social Justice Dialogue Series this semester with a keynote lecture from Rev. France Davis, pastor emeritus of the Salt Lake City’s Calvary Baptist Church and acclaimed civil rights activist. Rev. Davis's lecture will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 5 p.m. Rev. Davis’s lecture will focus on his civil rights engagement in Georgia to current socio-political events.
A native of Georgia, Davis arrived in Salt Lake City in 1972 to teach and to attend graduate school at the University of Utah. He was appointed instructor in Communication and in Ethnic Studies, earning a distinguished teacher award from the university. Davis retired as an adjunct associate professor in 2014.
During the 1960s, Davis participated in the Civil Rights Movement and marched in Selma, Alabama to Montgomery, Alabama promoting voting rights for African Americans. READ MORE REMINDER: Guest art critic to give public lecture on Colombian ArtThe Georgia College Department of Art is hosting a public lecture Feb. 17 at 5 p.m. in Arts and Sciences, room 272. Guest art critic and curator Carolina Ponce De León will talk about “Contemporary Colombian Art in the Context of Armed Conflict: An Overview.”
This topic focuses on visual art created in Colombia during its fifty-year armed conflict, which cost the country over 220,000 lives and displaced nearly 7 million people. Ponce de León's lecture will also address aesthetic approaches and strategies used by Colombian artists to address causes of the conflict, its violence and toll of human suffering.
Her experience will provide a “detailed, first-hand perspective on the role and contributions of art in a context of war,” said Art History Professor Ruben Yepes.
A new faculty member at Georgia College, Yepes is also from Colombia. His teaching and research focus on Colombian and Latin American Art.
