Call for GC 1010 Instructors for The Bridge Scholars Program

This is an open call for applications to teach a one-credit student success course in the summer Bridge Scholars Program.

About the Bridge Scholars Program:

The Bridge Scholars Program (BSP) is a yearlong Residential Learning Community which gives first-year students a head start on college through a special program designed to help them make a successful transition from high school to campus. During the summer program, BSP students are placed into a cohort and take a one-credit hour success course and six hours of core courses. Students who pass all courses with a grade of C or better are eligible to return to GC. Returning students then continue to participate in special extracurricular activities and peer mentoring during their first-year. Past BSP students have gone on to be academically successful campus leaders, this is due in part to the strong start they have had for their college experience. One of the highlights and benefits of the program is the close interaction that BSP students enjoy with their faculty and BSP staff. Summer Teaching Opportunity:

Instructors are needed to teach several sections of GC 1010: Student Success Seminar. This summer the course will meet from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 20th – June 22nd.  The course does not replace the fall FYAS; rather it is a "study skills boot camp" of sorts, designed to help Bridge Scholars strengthen their academic success skills. Rather than functioning as an orientation to campus or a career exploration course, the GC 1010 seminar covers topics such as test anxiety, time management, note-taking, reading comprehension and learning styles. The course utilizes the open-source text, College Success. Our goal is to front-load students with intensive academic skill-building before they proceed to take their summer core courses.

Instructors should understand that due to the nature of this program, there is an expectation of involvement outside the classroom to support and facilitate student development via relationship building and mentoring during the transition to university life. In addition to instructional time, those hired to teach with the BSP during summer 2022 will be required to participate in the following events:

• Friday, April 14th: BSP faculty/staff orientation 2-5 p.m.
• Saturday, June 18th: BSP Orientation and move-in
• Thursday, July 21st: Closing banquet

Compensation:

Instructors hired to teach the course will have one of two options. 1) You may elect to take three days of annual leave and receive a $625 stipend for teaching (on the June 30 payroll). 2) Obtain supervisory approval to teach the course as part of your regular work duties on those three days and forgo the stipend.

How to Apply:

Interested employees should submit a paragraph identifying: (1) their interest in the BSP program, (2) their qualifications for teaching this course, and (3) their thoughts on how instructor involvement outside of the classroom can support and enhance pedagogy. Hiring decisions will be made by late March.
