Two ways to celebrate International Women’s Day at Georgia College & State University

Today is International Women’s Day—a day in which we celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

International Women’s Day is truly global in scope as it is a day when we recognize women without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political.

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day celebration is #EmbraceEquity. You can learn more about this year’s theme, #EmbraceEquity, and view resources explaining why equity is crucial to efforts to create a more inclusive society on the International Women’s Day website.

Today, as the Georgia College & State University community joins the world in celebrating International Women’s Day, the Women’s Center offers two opportunities to celebrate women on our campus and discuss issues that speak to the state of equity in modern society.

  • At noon, Melissa Gerrior, program coordinator at the GCSU Women’s Center, will facilitate a Times Talk conversation entitled “Clothes, Bodies and Women’s Rights: What Can We Learn from Rihanna?” in the Ina Dillard Russell Library. The following background article may be referenced during the discussion so feel free to read it ahead of time or during the discussion: "The Politics of Rihanna’s Pregnancy Style" article on nytimes.com
  • At 5 p.m., the Women’s Center and GCSU LGBTQ+ Programs host the second annual She Speaks symposium in the Arts & Sciences Auditorium. She Speaks is an event in which Georgia College students nominate Women faculty and staff members to give a talk about one or more of their passions. This year’s speakers include Kristina Dandy, Christine Amezquita, Marie Puckett, Susan Spencer, Morgan Tickerhoof, Jenifer Flaherty, Nadirah Mayweather and Ashley Copeland.
