Music therapy student awarded Nicolet Law Scholarship

Georgia College & State University senior music therapy major Helen Whitacre has been awarded the Fall 2023 Nicolet Law Scholarship with her video submission about being kind and doing good through music.

In her video, Whitacre explains what music therapy is—an evidence-based practice. She underscores the main ingredient of musical interventions is to be authentic and compassionate with clients. She has served children with emotional and behavioral disorders, adults with intellectual disabilities and older adults with motor deficiencies. In the future. Whitacre hopes to work with vets.

She ends her video by singing a song she wrote about being kind and doing good.

She’s quoted at the Nicolet Law Scholarship website as saying, “I am incredibly grateful for being a recipient of the Nicolet Law Scholarship. The impact that this scholarship will have on my education, as well as my ability to serve others is immeasurable. As a music therapy student, this scholarship is giving me the blessing of time to focus on my studies and serve the community that surrounds me. Music has always been a passion of mine, and I am an advocate for its ability to heal, uplift and inspire individuals. Words cannot adequately express the depth of my gratitude for the opportunities that this scholarship allows. I am forever grateful for the doors that this scholarship opens and the countless lives it will touch.”

The $5,000 scholarship is given twice a year to help alleviate the financial strain of a college education or master’s degree.
