Times Talk at Georgia College & State University

First Times Talk of the semester this Wednesday Aug. 30,  12:00-12:50 p.m., 241  library - Dr. Brian Newsome, professor of History/Honors College dean, "France on Fire: Summer of Protests"

Please join us this Wed. Aug. 30 for our inaugural Times Talk conversation of the Fall semester in 241 Library. On 27 June, 17-year-old Frenchman Nahel Merzouk was shot and killed by a police officer in Nanterre, a western suburb of Paris, during a traffic stop. His killing touched off weeks of widespread protests characterized by attacks on state/municipal buildings, the burning of cars, and police efforts to contain the protests. What are the roots of the protests? How are they linked to both domestic and international trends? Dr. Brian Newsome, Dean of the John E. Sallstrom Honors College & professor of history, will facilitate the conversation. In preparation, participants are encouraged to read this brief New York Times overview;
