Course Description:
This course introduces and explores the two-sided nature of interactions between the East and the West with an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural approach. It will provide students with a liberal arts perspective and application. Principle goals are to develop an ability to read the outputs of musical interactions among the Ottoman Empire, Europe and the U.S. in the axis of music, history, sociology, cultural studies, politics and diplomacy; to raise cultural heritage awareness, to expand the boundaries of Western canon by introducing an archival, under-represented music literature and its history. The discussions will cover the Turquerie movement in the West and the modernization movement in the East represented by the Ottoman Empire, including the processes of creating a new musical genre in Western style. Audio/video samples will be an integral part of the class. Depending on the student’s discipline and choice, core experiences will include multidisciplinary exploration for individuals or small groups to perform or present.
