NEH Summer Institute results discussion on Zoom

We are pleased to announce that Andalusia Institute is hosting a series of spring Zoom events, primarily to share the results of NEH Summer Institutes on Flannery O'Connor.

The first event for this spring is 7-8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 1. Dr. Bruce Gentry will be the emcee as we hear from three speakers, he will try to make sure that we have Q&A time.

Here is the URL you should use to sign-up for the Zoom event: https://app.smartsheet.com/b/form/e612bba175f84f65811df2d52324ae50.

Any questions about signing up should go to Tammie Burke at tammie.burke@gcsu.edu

Here's our program for Feb. 1:

First we'll hear from Carole K. Harris, who will be speaking on "Gold Mine: Digging out from under the Maryat Lee Archives."

Our second presentation on Feb. 1 will have two parts: First, Jesse Swan will talk about a "sex-positive" reading of O'Connor texts, and then Jennifer Renee Blevins will present a "Fat-Positive Reading of 'Revelation.'"

Bios for speakers:

Carole K. Harris is an associate professor of English at New York City College of Technology (part of City University of New York, CUNY). She's been working for years on connections between Flannery O'Connor and Maryat Lee, and you may recall her smashing articles in the FLOCR (most recently in 2023 and 2018) about O'Connor and Lee. Harris is a veteran of the 2007 NEH Summer Institute on O'Connor.

Jesse Swan is a professor of English at the University of Northern Iowa. His presentation draws upon his ongoing work on sex-positive readings of early modern and modern English literature. He's read and studied O'Connor for as long as he can remember, and he's a veteran of the 2023 NEH Summer Institute on O'Connor.

Jennifer Renee Blevins is an instructor of English at the University of South Carolina. She is the author of Limited by Body Habitus: An American Fat Story and of several studies of American literature and fat-negative culture, including studies of O'Connor.
