GCSU Mock Trial defeats competitors at American Mock Trial Association
The Georgia College & State University Mock Trial team competed at the American Mock Trial Association's regional tournament this past weekend and defeated three other universities. GCSU defeated Duke University--which was ranked fifth in the country last year, the University of Alabama and the College of Charleston. Additionally, Stelios Spirou won an Outstanding Attorney award, which is his third of the season, which is given to the top 10 out of 72 attorneys. This has been the most successful season in the team's history, as it won a total of four awards and defeated outstanding teams, including Duke, Boston College, the University of Richmond and the University of Alabama. Over the last four years, the team has won a total of 11 awards.
These victories are significant because universities, like Duke and Alabama, have approximately 10 times the membership and budgets in the tens of thousands, thus enabling them to attend many more invitational tournaments throughout the country in preparation for the regional competition. To defeat them is a testament to GCSU's team members, as well as their skill and dedication. Additionally, the majority of our team is comprised of freshman and sophomores, which makes the future of mock trial very bright.
