Solar eclipse viewing event

A total solar eclipse will happen in parts of the U.S. Monday, April 8 2024. While the total eclipse can be viewed on a path from Texas to Maine, the view from the Georgia College & State University campus will be a partial solar eclipse from 1:47 p.m. to 4:21 p.m. EDT. Maximum sun coverage by the new moon will occur at 3:05 p.m. The face of the sun will be 81% obscured by the moon at that time. Safe viewing of the eclipse will be possible with eclipse glasses or telescopes designed for solar observations. The next coast-to-coast total solar eclipse in the U.S. will not occur until 2045.

The Physics and Astronomy Club will have a table at the A&S Fountain courtyard with solar telescopes and eclipse glasses from 2 until 4 p.m. April 8. Eclipse glasses will also be available in the days leading up to the eclipse at the Ina Dillard Russell Library circulation desk while supplies last.
