Guest Artist Concert: Claire Salli, saxophone- "The Stylistic Saxophone"
Thursday, Feb. 20 Georgia College & State University welcomes saxophonist Dr. Claire Salli for a Guest Artist Recital, “The Stylistic Saxophone,” at 7:30 p.m. in Max Noah Recital Hall. Each piece on the program has its own unique style, each different from the rest, creating a fun program that is accessible for all audiences. The program starts off with a neo classical French piece, “Improvisation et Caprice” by Eugene Bozza. Two short etudes composed by Argentine composer Astor Piazolla, who is known for creating a new style of tango music, will be performed. Then the recital pays homage to a genre that has made the saxophone a worldwide phenomenon, jazz, with a piece by Dutch composer Jacob TV, “Billie,” named after American jazz singer Billie Holiday. The final piece, a duet with GCSU’s Dr. Andrew Allen, titled “Stubborn as Hell,” by American composer Stacy Garrop, is a contemporary piece that is essentially a fight between both players over who has the dominant voice. This concert will also be livestreamed at www.facebook.com/GCMusicDepartment. A $5 donation is encouraged. Online donations can be made at give.gcsu.edu/g/department-of-music/. All proceeds benefit music scholarships or the GCSU Department of Music through GCSU Foundation, Inc. For more information, please email music@gcsu.edu or call 478-445-8289.
