Guest Artist and Faculty Recital:  Samuel Gingher & Hue Jang, piano

Monday, Feb. 9 A Guest Artist and Faculty Recital, titled, “Beyond the Canon” will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Max Noah Recital Hall at Georgia College & State University. Featuring guest artist Samuel Gingher (East Carolina University) and faculty member Hue Jang, this piano recital explores rarely performed masterworks by three composers who shaped 19th-century pianism: Johann Baptist Cramer, Carl Czerny, and Franz Liszt. The program balances 30 minutes of four-hand duet repertoire with 30 minutes of solo works.

The program features Cramer's 12 Nouvelles Etudes en forme de Nocturnes, Op. 96 (1842), a set of sophisticated four-hand etudes recently discovered by Dr. Gingher at Duke University's rare book library. This performance may represent the work's modern revival and likely its first U.S. performance. Cramer, dubbed "Glorious John" by his contemporaries, was a leading figure in London's musical life between Mozart and Chopin.

Dr. Gingher's solo set features three contrasting works by Carl Czerny, Beethoven's student and Liszt's teacher: a Baroque-inspired Prelude and Fugue, the lyrical Nocturne Sentimental, and the virtuosic Prestissimo movement from Czerny's Piano Sonata No. 1. The program concludes with Liszt's dramatic Ballade No. 2 in B Minor, inspired by the Greek myth of Hero and Leander.

This concert will be live-streamed at www.facebook.com/GCMusicDepartment. A $5 donation is encouraged. Online donations can be made at give.gcsu.edu/g/department-of-music/.
