GCSU Celebrates the Arts during ArtOber

By Amanda Respess

T he Georgia College & State University Department of Art is expanding its annual ArtOber event. The interdisciplinary celebration of the arts is tonight, Oct. 29, from 5 to 7 p.m. in Ennis Hall on the GCSU campus. ArtOber is free and open to the public.

The departments of Art, Communication, English, Music and Theatre & Dance will come together to offer hands-on demos, live music, dance, readings, exhibits, an ice cream party and more.

Students and faculty from the Department of Art will give demonstrations in printmaking, painting, silkscreen and camera obscura – a technique used by artists including famed Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer.

The Department of Communication is screening short films (recommended for audiences age 13+) and giving storytelling performances. The English Department is also contributing readings by MFA students and faculty, as well as a workshop by the Poetry Club.

The Department of Theatre & Dance will give visitors a sneak peek into their upcoming production “MLM is for Murder,” which debuts Nov. 5 at the Campus Black Box Theatre. Live music by students from the Music Department will include performances by the Sax Quartet and Flute Orchestra.

ArtOber includes a silent auction – a new feature for this year’s event. Auction items were contributed by each of the participating departments, and the auction proceeds will go back to each department’s foundation fund.

Finally, ArtOber also includes a sweet treat sponsored by the Department of Art. Guests can enjoy ice cream served in hand-made pottery bowls which they can then take home as a keepsake.
