From Classroom to Community: Turning Academic Skills into Real-World Impact

Students are invited to learn how to leverage their liberal arts education into careers that will make a difference at home and abroad. Dr. Aschale Siyoum of Scholars at Risk will share his pathway from academia to practice, reflecting on lessons learned from his 10-plus years of research and applied policy work to include his work with government and NGOs in Ethiopia.

Dr Siyoum earned his Ph.D. in Development Studies from a university in the Netherlands. His research has resulted in multiple peer-reviewed publications in international journals, primarily focused on food security and development challenges. He has presented his work at academic conferences in both the Netherlands and the United States. In addition to his academic career, he has undertaken consultancy assignments for government institutions and international organizations, including Save the Children International and USAID. He has also designed and facilitated professional workshops on emergency response, humanitarian assistance and food security for practitioners and technical experts.

The event takes place Feb. 26 from 5 to 6 p.m. in Arts & Sciences, 366.
