New, autonomous cleaning robots join the GCSU Facilities Team

As students return for the 2026-2027 academic year, they may notice a few new "employees" working across campus. These new team members are not human, but autonomous cleaning robots that have joined Georgia College & State University's Building Services Department.

To help maintain and elevate the cleanliness of campus facilities, the Facilities Department recently purchased four autonomous cleaning robots. The new fleet includes two autonomous floor scrubbers assigned to the Arts & Sciences Building, one autonomous floor vacuum that will operate in Russell Library, and one autonomous floor vacuum serving the Centennial Center.

While autonomous cleaning robots are not a new concept, bringing this technology to Georgia College is an exciting step forward. The purpose behind the investment is simple: to support the work of GCSU's custodial staff and continue enhancing the level of service provided across campus.

New technology often comes with concerns about employee replacement, but that is not the case at Georgia College. These robots are not intended to replace custodial positions. Instead, they are designed to offset routine floor-cleaning tasks, allowing custodians to focus on the detailed work that requires a human touch. By taking on scheduled floor care, the robots free up custodial staff to spend more time on high dusting, stairwell cleaning, classroom detailing and maintaining other high-traffic areas throughout campus, helping raise the overall standard of cleanliness.

Another advantage of autonomous cleaning equipment is consistency. Unlike human employees, robots do not take sick leave or annual leave. When staffing shortages or employee absences occur, routine floor care can fall behind schedule, creating a backlog that may take several days to recover. These autonomous cleaning robots help ensure that scheduled floor care continues uninterrupted, allowing buildings to maintain a consistently clean appearance while reducing the risk of delayed cleaning schedules.

The robots operate using LiDAR, an advanced mapping and navigation technology that allows them to clean designated areas safely and efficiently. Once programmed, they can perform routine cleaning functions with minimal supervision while working alongside students, faculty, staff and visitors.

The goal of purchasing these robots is not to replace people, but to elevate the overall cleanliness of Georgia College's campus. By combining innovative technology with the dedication and expertise of GCSU's custodial staff, Building Services can provide cleaner facilities, improve operational efficiency and create an even better environment for learning, working and campus life.
