Supporting Student Success through Early Alerts
Supporting Student Success through Early Alerts
Dear Faculty and Staff,
As we begin the semester, a key tool that is available to faculty and staff to support students is the new Early Alert system. This system will play an important role in our collective commitment to student success.
Early Alerts help our campus-wide Student Success team identify students who may be struggling with academic, personal, or transitional challenges and connect them to support and resources before those challenges become obstacles to persistence and achievement. The Early Alert form is available in MyGCSU > Quick Links. You should submit an Early Alert if you observe any of the following:
- Frequent absences or a noticeable change in attendance
- Low or missing grades
- Declining participation or engagement
- Difficulty adjusting academically or socially
- Expressions of financial concern
- Concerns about a student’s connection to the campus community
- Indications that a student is considering withdrawing or transferring
Early identification is the most important part of this process. Please do not wait for concerns to escalate or become insurmountable before submitting an alert. Our goal is to provide meaningful, early support as soon as concerns emerge, helping students reengage, persist, and succeed. Because challenges can arise any time, faculty and staff can also submit an Early Alert at any point in the semester, whether it’s the first week of the semester or the last.
Please also note that the Early Alert is not a replacement for a CARE Team report. Situations involving disengagement, distress, behavioral concerns, or personal crisis should continue to be referred to the CARE Team. Immediate safety concerns or threats of harm should be referred to Public Safety.
