Mini Math Talk: "Paradox and the Unknowable in Mathematics"

Please join the Department of Chemistry, Physics & Mathematics for a Mini Math Talk, "Paradox and the Unknowable in Mathematics," given by Dr. Rachel Epstein on Wednesday, October 7, 5-5:30pm, in A&S 272. Mini math talks are 20-30-minute presentations about any topic related to math. All are welcome! Snacks will be provided.

About the talk: Many people think of mathematics as something with concrete answers, where every statement is either true or false and everyone agrees on everything. However, when you get deep into the logical foundations of mathematics, a lot of unexpected things happen, leading to uncertainty and disagreement. In this presentation, we will explore some of the weird results of set theory and mathematical logic, such as the Banach Tarski Paradox and Gödel's Incompleteness Theorems. No prior math knowledge is necessary!
