Holmes-Davis (‘00) receives Fulbright to create study books for one-handed woodwind instrumentalists

Associate Professor of Music and Executive Director of the Center for Music Education Dr. Tina Holmes-Davis (‘00) has received a Fulbright Award to create study book primers for one-handed woodwind instrumentalists at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom.

Holmes-Davis, who earned Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor of Music Education degrees from Georgia College, was selected from a highly competitive applicant pool. She will work with instrument builders, one-handed musicians, composers associated with the University of Manchester and the One-Handed Musical Instrument Trust (OHMI) to develop the primers.

Once one-handed musicians receive their instruments, they must learn to play on their own, but the planned study books are designed to guide them toward performance mastery more efficiently and may help increase the number of visible one-handed and disabled musicians within the population of instrumental musicians.

“As a Fulbright Scholar, I will work to advance the educational opportunities for disabled musicians around the world,” Holmes-Davis said. “I hope this work will enable me to meaningfully contribute to the current global efforts coordinated by OHMI.”

Holmes-Davis will be in the U.K. from February through May 2027 and plans to complete the books during that time. She will present a PDF to OHMI before returning to the United States.
