Message Regarding Chemical Fumes in Milledgeville

Dear Campus Community:

We are aware of the chemical company fumes emanating from the Conyers area plant since Sunday, and today because of wind shifts and the low cloud cover over Milledgeville and Baldwin County, the smell of chlorine has been detected in our area. Nevertheless, we have no information from the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) or the Baldwin County Emergency Management Agency, both of which we are in contact with, that concentrations of the leaking gases are of such a level in our area as to be hazardous.

Update to campus operations and events at GCSU

As conditions improve following the recent weather event, here is an update on services and events happening at Georgia College & State University.

The MAX is open until 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27 and will resume regular hours Saturday, Sept. 28. Campus shuttles will run until 7:30 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday and until 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 29.

Russell Library will reopen Sunday at 1 p.m.  

The Wellness & Recreation Center will reopen Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 10 p.m.

Dining Operations Update for Thursday Evening, September 26

Baldwin County has declared a state of emergency tonight which asks everyone except first responders to stay off the roads as the storm arrives. Accordingly, the MAX will close at 7:30 p.m. Tonight.  Boxed meals will be available at the West Campus Center for residents of The Village until 9 p.m. tonight.

Please stay indoors tonight and refer to earlier messages on this site regarding tips for staying safe. Contact GCSU Department of Public Safety if you have an emergency at 478-445-4400 or dial 911. GCSU Public Safety’s non-emergency number is 478-445-4054

Hurricane Helene: GCSU closed Thursday and Friday, essential services will continue

Due to weather and road conditions that are predicted as a result of Hurricane Helene, Georgia College & State University will suspend all classes and programming activities for Thursday, September 26, and Friday, September 27. Normal business operations will cease and only essential personnel will report to work. 

S. Columbia St. closure on Tuesday, Sept. 17

From Georgia College Facilities and Public Safety


On Tuesday, September 17, South Columbia Street from Hancock to Greene Street will be closed for eight hours due to having a crane lift on the street beside Adams Hall. Vehicle traffic going East or West on Hancock and Greene Streets will not be affected.

Employees who park in the Adams Lot (Lot #03) will be able to use the S. Columbia Street exit, but may experience minor delays.

Come out and enjoy our Georgia College & State University Jazz Jam Session Tuesday, Nov. 19, 7-9 p.m. at Amici Café, downtown Milledgeville, presented by Jazz at Georgia College. Hosted by our faculty and student jazz musicians, the GCSU Jam Session is open to all members of the community who are interested in working on their jazz and improvisation skills. Bring your instrument if you want to play or come just to enjoy the menu and the live music at Amici Café. We hope to see you there.
