President Cox welcomes Chancellor Sonny Perdue and other dignitaries for Veterans Day Celebration
While visiting Georgia College & State University Thursday, Gov. Sonny Perdue, chancellor of the University System of Georgia, joined numerous other veterans from GCSU and Milledgeville to recognize Veterans Day. Veterans Day is celebrated Nov. 11, but this year the holiday is observed on Friday, Nov. 10.
The small ceremony took place at the Veterans' Memorial near front campus, in front of the Old Courthouse. Chancellor Perdue, himself a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, placed a wreath next to the marker honoring Milledgeville citizens who died in World War I. The other guests to place memorial wreaths included: GCSU Public Safety Officer Kaitlyn Crawford, U.S. Army veteran; GCSU Biology Professor Dr. Al Mead, U.S. Army veteran; The Honorable Floyd Griffin Jr., U.S. Army veteran; and Georgia State Senator Rick Williams.
The Veteran’s Day Ceremony began with the National Anthem performed on trumpet by GCSU student Alex Burch.
GCSU President Cathy Cox welcomed the ceremony attendees and acknowledged the numerous other special guests and veterans in attendance, including: Board of Regents Chair Harold Reynolds, Milledgeville Mayor Mary Parham-Copelan, Baldwin County Commissioner Henry Craig, Board of Commissioners Chair Emily Davis, Georgia House Representative Ken Vance, GCSU Trustee Ted Smith, and Mark Dehler, Pres. Cox’s spouse and a U.S. Army veteran.
Members of the Max Noah Singers, directed by GCSU Music Professor Dr. Jennifer Flory, concluded the celebration with an acapella performance of “America the Beautiful.”
