Legends of Honors: "Save the Effing Bees! Eco-Anxiety in a Shakespeare Web Series" with Dr. Jennifer Flaherty

This semester, the John E. Sallstrom Honors College is again pleased to host Zoom-based Legends of Honors sessions for alumni, friends, and students of the Honors College. On March 6 at 6:00 p.m., Dr. Jenny Flaherty, Georgia College & State University professor of English, will deliver a Legends of Honors Zoom presentation titled “Save the Effing Bees! Eco-Anxiety in a Shakespeare Web Series,” which focuses on the web series Bright Summer Night, an adaptation of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night’s Dream by New Zealand-based production company The Candle Wasters. The series reimagines Shakespeare's comedy as a carnivalesque party in Wellington in 2016, substituting substance abuse for Cupid’s flower and the pressures of the contemporary youth experience for the oppressive laws of Athens. As characters fixate on the personal joys and fears of friendships and romances, they are also preoccupied with the grief and stress of living during a growing global environmental catastrophe. Drawing on ecocriticism, adaptation theory, and youth studies, this session will explore how Shakespeare can be used by young people as social commentary in the digital age. Please register via the QR code or the embedded link for "Save the Effing Bees! Eco-Anxiety in a Shakespeare Web Series" with Dr. Jennifer Flaherty, and we will send you the Zoom link as well as a timely reminder.
