New Audio Production Certificate starting spring 2025

The new audio production certificate is an interdisciplinary certificate between the Georgia College & State University Department of Communication and Department of Music. 

This five-course certificate program is designed for individuals who want a practical foundation in audio production. Students explore the basics of radio broadcasting, podcasting, acoustics, sound editing and design, mixing, recording and apply this knowledge with the creation of quality audio projects at a professional level. This knowledge is deepened with hands-on work with studio hardware and various audio workstation applications. The certificate will prepare students for professional work in broadcasting, digital media and studio recording.

Requirements (13 hours total)

·         MSCM 3311 Audio Production

This course provides an overview of various audio production techniques and tools for application in various communication products and platforms. Students will explore the proper use of audio equipment and learn how to distribute to various platforms and audiences. (3 hours) 

·         MSCM 3313 Intro to Podcasting

This course presents an overview of the podcasting industry, including how to write and produce a podcast, the major companies involved in podcasting, studio set up and editing, how to promote a program, and jobs available in the industry. (3 hours)

·         MSCM 3350 Radio Operations

This course will focus on the various departments of operation at a radio station while applying the practices to a local non-commercial radio station. Ethical, legal and financial responsibilities of a station will also be topics of discussion. (3 hours)

·         MUSC 3315 Music Technology I

An introduction to the history, tools and techniques of electronic music. Topics include acoustics, digital recording, digital editing, composition and basic analog sound synthesis techniques. Through lectures, lab work, composing, reading and critical listening, students will gain a broad understanding of the role of technology in music-making. (2 hours)

·         MUSC 3320 Music Technology II

Topics include MIDI sequencing, basic film and video scoring techniques, advanced analog sound synthesis and an introduction to digital sound design. Through lectures, lab work, composing, reading and critical-listening, students will gain a deeper understanding of the techniques and aesthetics of electronic music. (2 hours)
