Georgia College to Adjust Work, Move-In Schedules Ahead of Winter Storm  - Thu, Jan 9, 2025 2:35 p.m.

In anticipation of an extreme winter weather system expected to sweep across the state this week, Georgia College will transition to remote work for faculty and staff tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 10, and adjust the move-in schedule for new and returning students.

Current forecasts project freezing temperatures and precipitation, which is likely to result in dangerous road conditions in the middle Georgia area Friday, Jan. 10, and continuing through Saturday, Jan. 11. Sleet and snow are predicted north of Interstate-20 in the Atlanta-Metro area and northern parts of the state, although the models continue change and effects could extend into our area.

Baldwin County Emergency Management is encouraging residents not to drive Friday into Saturday morning, unless necessary. To ensure safe travels to campus for all Bobcats, new and returning students who will live in GCSU residence halls are instructed to report to campus on Sunday, when all forecasts indicate that warmer weather should return to the state.

Campus will be closed Friday, Jan. 10, with all in-person activities canceled throughout the day. Essential staff are expected to report as usual unless otherwise directed. If you are unsure whether you are considered “essential” staff, please confer with your direct supervisor.

Original Message: Georgia College Closely Monitoring Approaching Winter Storm - Wednesday, Jan 8, 2025 5:07 p.m.

GCSU leadership is currently monitoring a winter weather system that is expected to sweep extreme weather conditions throughout Georgia later this week. Current forecasts project freezing temperatures, with a chance of precipitation, in the middle Georgia area Friday, Jan. 10, and continuing through Saturday, Jan. 11. Higher probability of sleet and/or snow is expected north of Interstate-20 in the Atlanta-Metro area and northern parts of the state.

All current forecasts indicate that warmer weather should return to the state by Sunday, making delays to the start of the semester unnecessary.

The university may make adjustments to Friday’s operating schedule, which includes new-student orientation, as well as expectations for staff. Information regarding those changes, should they become necessary, will be released as soon as it is available, but no later than midday Thursday, after more timely information is obtained in the National Weather Service’s daily briefing.

In the event that a new or returning student is not be able to make it back to campus before Monday, Jan. 13, they should coordinate directly with their faculty on their schedules and assignments.

For more on the current weather models, monitor the National Weather Service.
