March is Emergency Preparedness Month
Here are a few tips you can use.
1. Know the Campus Emergency Procedures:
- Familiarize yourself with emergency protocols for natural disasters, lockdowns, fires, and medical emergencies. Talk to your CA’s and CD’s or Public Safety for this information.
- Review the university’s emergency action plan and evacuation routes.
- Identify designated shelter areas for severe weather events like tornadoes.
- Understand procedures for active threats, including lockdowns and secure-in-place protocols.
- GCSU DPS is a great place to get this information.
2. Create Personal Emergency Plans & Stock Emergency Kits:
- Develop a personal emergency plan, including meeting points and communication strategies with friends and family.
- Build an emergency kit with essentials like:
- Water (one gallon per person per day)
- Non-perishable food
- First-aid supplies
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- Medications and important documents
- Charged battery packs for electronic devices like cell phones
- Keep a mini emergency kit in your backpack with first-aid items and a phone charger.
3. Understand Emergency Communication Channels:
- Sign up for campus emergency alerts via text, email, and app notifications. Use our GC Alert and RAVE App on your cell phone to stay connected.
- Recognize outdoor sirens and what they indicate.
- Follow official university social media and websites for real-time updates.
- Know the emergency phone numbers for campus security and local emergency services.
