M ajor renovations to John Kurtz Field, home of the GCSU Bobcat Baseball team, are coming that will elevate the fan experience at home games.

The plans, according to Director of Athletics Wendell Staton, call for the existing bleachers and press box to be razed. In their place, 450 new chairback seats will be installed, in addition to the construction of a two-story building featuring meeting space and suites.

The field is named in honor of the late John Kurtz, the Georgia College Hall of Famer and legendary coach who put Georgia College baseball on the map.

“I'm just really excited that we're going to get a new a new stadium. It's been a long time coming. I think it will definitely enhance and add character to the program,” said Kurtz’ widow, Mrs. Kathy Kurtz.

The first floor of the building will house the press box while, upstairs, a multi-purpose area will be available for gameday viewing as well as for classes and various campus events.

A new concession stand and bathrooms will also be built in between the baseball and softball fields.

The renovations and new additions begin just as Bobcat Baseball welcomes new head coach Jeff Pelkey, who joins GCSU from Peach Belt Conference rival Flagler College.

"Having spent eight years in the Peach Belt Conference, Coach Pelkey has tremendous knowledge of our league," said Staton. "He has been very successful in recruiting the state of Georgia and has a long history of developing outstanding pitchers, boasting seven All-PBC pitchers over the last six seasons.”

The renovations to John Kurtz Field are expected to be completed in time for the first pitch of the 2027 baseball season.
